To stabilise old landfills prior to excavation
Before an old landfill can be excavated (e.g. for site reclamation,
rehabilitation or repair of leachate pipelines), the material buried in the
landfill has to be treated.
The treatment
Use in temporary waste storage
In larger municipalities as well as smaller communities it happens again and again that waste has to be placed in intermediate storage.
Temporary use of the SMELL-WELL-System prevents the development of the odour nuisance typically associated with the interim storage or transfer of waste.
Like in large-scale operations, the SMELL-WELL-System prevents the generation of obnoxious odours also in small facilities by introducing into the waste warm, high-oxygen air enriched with bacteria promoting decomposition.
SMELL-WELL-System:
alternately “extracts” and “injects” air.
When warm, humid air high in oxygen and bacteria is injected into waste material, the micro-climate inside the material changes after as little as one to five days.
For this purpose, air injection and extraction lances of a length of 3.5 metres are driven into the landfill across an area of 1200 to 1500 m2, spaced 5 to 6 metres apart.
Two separate systems are used for air injection and air extraction, with one system blowing fresh air passed through a biofilter, enriched with bacteria and heated into the landfilled material while the other system extracts the odorous gases present in the landfill.
As the anaerobic environment in the landfill is converted to aerobic conditions, the malodorous emissions disappear. Biofilters deodorise the extracted gases and reduce their pollutant levels.
In order to prevent the formation of channels in the material, the direction of the air flows is alternated at hourly intervals.
The SMELL-WELL-System is the key factor in landfill reclamation and remediation!
